Poker straddle win rate: one $600 result, three rates
An original mixed-straddle session model shows why dollars per hour, posted bb/100, and active-blind units can give different readings of the same profit.

A straddle can change the unit in your poker win rate without changing the cash you won. In the mixed session below, a $600 profit is 50 posted big blinds per 100 hands. Normalize each block by its active blind instead, and the figure becomes 37.5 units per 100 hands. Both calculations can be reproduced. They answer different measurement questions.
Straddles remain part of current cash-game discussion. A September 9 post from The OG Clubhouse advertised a $1/$3 game with a mandatory $6 UTG straddle. A September 7 post by Andreas Wagner promoted a discussion about the cost of straddling. These posts show current examples and questions, not evidence of a profitable strategy or a national trend.
This analysis uses an invented $1/$3 session to isolate the recording problem. It does not estimate the expected value of posting a straddle. The results are assumed observations, after table costs, with no claim that the sample proves a player's long-term skill.
A fixed $3 big blind gives 50 bb/100
Suppose you record 400 hands and finish $600 ahead. The posted big blind stays $3 throughout. The first 100 hands have no straddle and produce $300 profit. The next 300 hands have a $6 straddle and produce another $300. For illustration, the session lasts 16 hours.
The posted-blind calculation is 100 × $600 ÷ $3 ÷ 400 = 50 bb/100. The hourly result is $600 ÷ 16 = $37.50/hour. Neither formula needs an estimate of how often you personally posted the straddle. Both need complete results, including hands where you folded.

PokerTracker's documentation defines its no-limit and pot-limit BB/100 in big blinds; fixed-limit reporting uses big bets. That definition does not establish how every imported straddle hand is normalized. Check the recorded stake and the statistic's definition before comparing software with a manual log.
A player who labels this result only as "50 per 100" has left out the unit. Write "$1/$3 posted bb/100" and record the straddle conditions alongside it. The win rate calculator can reproduce the fixed-unit result with $600 profit, a $3 big blind, and 400 hands.
Converting each block gives 37.5 active-blind units
For a separate comparison, define one active-blind unit as the largest live blind in that hand. In this model, that is $3 for the first block and $6 for the second. This is an explicit analytical convention, not a universal poker-tracker statistic.
The first block wins $300 ÷ $3 = 100 active-blind units. The second wins $300 ÷ $6 = 50. Add those units, then divide by the total hand count: 100 × (100 + 50) ÷ 400 = 37.5 active-blind units per 100 hands.
The separate block rates are 100 and 16.67 active-blind units per 100 hands. Their simple average, 58.33, is wrong for the combined sample because the second block contains three times as many hands. Weight the unrounded rates by 100 and 300 hands, or add the unit profits first.
The chart converts each block before adding it. All cash results and hand counts are invented inputs.
Another shortcut uses the average active blind: (100 × $3 + 300 × $6) ÷ 400 = $5.25. Dividing the total profit by $5.25 produces 28.57 units per 100 hands. That is a different statistic. In general, dividing a total by an average denominator does not equal adding amounts that were each divided by their own denominator. Here, the profit per hand changes between blocks, so the shortcut loses information.
Keep the cash result beside the normalized rate
If all 400 hands had a $6 active blind, the same $600 profit would be 25 active-blind units per 100 hands. If none had a straddle, it would be 50. Those are alternative accounting scenarios with a fixed assumed profit. They do not predict what the player would have won under different rules.
For a mixed game, retain each block's net cash result, hand count, hours, posted blinds, and active blind. If you only recorded the total cash result and a rough straddle percentage, you cannot reconstruct the exact hand-normalized rate. You need to know which profits and losses occurred under each stake condition.
The original session still paid $37.50 per hour under every label. Comparing future sessions in dollars per hour keeps that economic result visible, while the block records show whether the game size changed. A few large pots can dominate a 400-hand sample; these figures describe the sample and give no confidence interval for a future win rate.
Use the straddle calculator for the separate question of stack depth, raise size, and flop SPR. When you record the next session, keep the posted big blind and straddle amount in separate fields. That preserves enough information to compare either convention later.
